The role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in healthcare delivery has expanded significantly, especially in underserved areas where physician shortages exist. Nurse practitioners provide primary care, disease prevention, and chronic disease management, making them an essential component of healthcare systems worldwide (Adeyemi & Usman, 2024). Their ability to deliver cost-effective and high-quality healthcare has been widely recognized, yet they face numerous challenges that can impact service delivery.
In Sokoto State, nurse practitioners work in both urban and rural healthcare settings, often serving as the primary healthcare providers in resource-limited areas. Despite their growing role, they encounter significant obstacles such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, workforce shortages, restrictive policies, and limited professional recognition (Hassan & Sanni, 2024). Additionally, socio-cultural factors, including patient distrust and resistance to non-physician-led care, further complicate their practice.
Understanding the challenges faced by nurse practitioners in Sokoto State is crucial for improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that patients receive optimal care. This study aims to examine these challenges and explore possible solutions to enhance the effectiveness of nurse practitioners in providing quality healthcare.
Nurse practitioners in Sokoto State operate under challenging conditions that may hinder their ability to provide quality healthcare. Issues such as limited access to medical equipment, high patient loads, and regulatory constraints can negatively impact patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.
If these challenges are not adequately addressed, the effectiveness of nurse practitioners in delivering quality care may be compromised, leading to suboptimal health outcomes for patients. Despite their growing role in healthcare, there is limited research on the specific difficulties they encounter in Sokoto State. This study seeks to fill this gap by identifying key challenges and recommending strategies for improvement.

This study focuses on nurse practitioners working in healthcare facilities across Sokoto State, examining the challenges they face and their impact on patient care. Limitations may include variations in healthcare facility resources, differences in nurse training levels, and potential reluctance of participants to disclose workplace challenges.
